Just Got Engaged? Now What?

Congratulations on your recent engagement! You’re about to spend the next few weeks staring at a fantastic bit of bling on your hand as you begin organising the biggest party of your life! So where do you start?

Well, our ULTIMATE WEDDING PLANNING CHECKLIST happens to be the perfect springboard! But before you head on over, we have a few words of advice for you…

Every wedding planning checklist will tell you that your first priorities are to set a date, set a budget and draw up a guest list. However, what they all fail to mention is that before you start thinking about such things, you should carefully consider how much stress you are prepared to endure during the planning of this momentous event.

Let’s not beat around the bush: organising a wedding can be an intensely stressful experience. In fact in a recent survey of 500 newly-weds by Zola Wedding Registry, 71% said wedding planning was more stressful than moving home, job hunting, managing debt or applying to university!

So if you want to make the most of this unique and special moment in your life, you’ll need to effectively manage this stress. We recommend  the following:

  • Take a step back and try to see the bigger picture: you’re planning a party for family and friends, not a mission to Mars.
  • Don’t obsess yourself with trying to please everyone else. You’ll be on a hiding to nothing. It’s your Big Day, not theirs.
  • At some stage during the engagement or even on the day itself, things are not going to go according to plan. However, it’s highly likely that your guests won’t notice, or even care! So don’t obsess about the infinite finer details.
  • Understand that the next few months are going to be gone before you know it. So make the most of it! You don’t want to look back with regret.
  • Although the budget may be set in stone, you can still be flexible on dates and guest numbers can’t you?
  • Opting for Friday or a Sunday wedding or even an off-peak date will maximise your budget and help reduce stress. As will cutting the guest list to immediate family and close friends.
  • Hiring a wedding planner to conduct a venue only search will often save you money due to the commissions they can attain on your behalf. It will also save you countless hours that would otherwise be spent hunting for that elusive venue.

Finally, try to be as flexible as possible throughout the entire wedding planning process. The more flexible you are the easier it will be to accomplish the tasks ahead of you and the happier you will be. And that’s what it’s all about isn’t it?

Wedding Checklist

Updated: 13 June 2018

The Ultimate Wedding Planning Checklist

If you want to plan the perfect wedding, you’ll need a comprehensive wedding checklist. So here for your convenience is our ultimate wedding planning timeline. It’s a checklist of all the things you need to do and when you need to do them. Better get your skates on!

The Timeline

For the purpose of this post we’ve allowed a 12 month lead time between getting engaged and getting married but you can modify it according to how much time you yourself have to plan the wedding.

For example we often work to a 7-9 month lead time and have been known to plan a substantial wedding in 10 weeks! If that’s the case, just work through the criteria below in order until you find yourself up to date on the timeline. Best of luck!
